Dinesh Karthik, India’s wicket-keeper, opened up about what happened behind the scenes during the two-hour delay before the second T20 international in Nagpur. The toss was delayed due to a wet outfield. Multiple inspections took place, but umpires felt it was unsafe for the players to field under such conditions. However, owing to the ground staff’s incessant hard work, both teams agreed to play a game of 8 overs per side.

While attending a press conference, Dinesh Karthik revealed that inspired by the crowd’s enthusiasm and emotions, both teams agreed to play even in unsatisfactory conditions. They took the field just to honor the people of Nagpur and entertain them with whatever cricket they could play.

Karthik said: “Look, I think we were very keen to play. There was one reason and one reason only. From the time we started from the hotel, right upto the stadium, there were crowds throughout. We took more time than we should have to reach the ground. So the amount of people that were standing in the ground, we knew it was a special occasion for us. After COVID, there have not been occasions where people in the city have come.”

Karthik further added:

“We wanted to make sure we played the game, obviously at the start of the game, we felt it might be hard. Both teams were very courageous and kind to play the game. The conditions were good to field, but not the best. Both the teams played the game for the city of Nagpur and I think they deserve this because they came in full numbers, one of the loudest crowds that I have been a part of in a long long time so really happy to have played the game. Just to play it for the people of Nagpur is really special.”

India defeated Australia by 6 wickets after Rohit’s heroics. India chased down a total of 91 with 4 balls to spare. Now, the contingents move to Hyderabad for the series decider.
