Cheteshwar Pujara Reaches The 20,000-Run Summit In First-Class Cricket

During the Ranji Trophy third-round clash between Saurashtra and Vidarbha at the VCA Stadium, Cheteshwar Pujara, renowned for his steadfastness at the crease, exhibited his batting prowess, achieving the significant milestone of 20,000 first-class runs. Playing a measured innings, the 35-year-old compiled a commendable half-century, facing 137 deliveries to amass 66 runs before succumbing to Harsh Dubey’s delivery, caught leg before wicket.

In a compelling partnership with Vishvarajsinh Jadeja, Pujara contributed to a substantial total of 87 runs, thereby tilting the scales in favour of Saurashtra against Vidarbha. This marked yet another instance of Pujara’s impactful performances in the domestic circuit.

In a previous clash against Jharkhand, Pujara’s insatiable hunger for runs shone through as he crafted his 17th double-hundred in first-class cricket. His unbeaten 243 off 356 balls played a pivotal role in Saurashtra’s commanding declaration at 578 for four, securing a formidable lead of 436 runs over Jharkhand in the first innings. Pujara’s nimble footwork against spinners and flawless execution of shots, including 30 boundaries, showcased his mastery with the bat.

This sublime double century also marked Pujara’s eighth in the prestigious Ranji Trophy and his 17th in first-class cricket, placing him in the esteemed company of cricketing stalwarts Herbert Sutcliffe and Mark Ramprakash. Only the legendary Don Bradman (37), Wally Haymond (36), and Patsy Hendren (22) stand ahead in this elite list.

Despite not featuring in India’s Test squad since the 2023 World Test Championship final, Pujara’s enduring brilliance with the bat remains undeniable. With young talent Shubman Gill holding the No. 3 spot for India in Tests, Pujara’s remarkable double century in the Ranji Trophy raises speculation about a potential return to the international arena.

As India prepares for a challenging five-match Test series against England starting on January 25, the timely resurgence of Cheteshwar Pujara adds an intriguing subplot to the team dynamics, leaving fans eagerly anticipating whether his stellar domestic form can translate into a comeback on the international stage.
