Chris Silverwood has resigned as the head coach of Sri Lanka’s men’s team, effective immediately. Silverwood had been at the job since April 2022. SLC extended his contract in April until the conclusion of the present T20 World Cup.

SLC CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo that Silverwood informed the board of his decision to retire before any internal discussions about whether to prolong his term further.

“Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together,” said Silverwood.

“I would like to thank the players, coaches, backroom staff, and management of the SLC for their support during my time in Sri Lanka. Without your support, none of this success would have been possible. It has been a real honor for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories,” added Silverwood.

Chris Silverwood led the Lankans to victory in the Asia Cup, including a series against Bangladesh, securing their spot in the finals. Moreover, there were some more bilateral series that were won by the team at home and abroad. They included two away Test series victories over Bangladesh and a 50-over home series victory over Australia.

Previously known as a swift bowler, Silverwood will be remembered for his efforts to boost Sri Lanka’s speed abilities. Furthermore, for the final 2023 ODI Asia Cup, they won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022. On the other hand, Sri Lanka has had two bad World Cup campaigns during this time.

In the past year, her ninth position in the ODI World Cup rankings has seen her miss on qualification grounds for the 2025 Champions Trophy. They also lost to South Africa and Bangladesh in the opening round of the current T20 World Cup, sending them home.
