Cricket Australia (CA) is exploring a novel idea to take one of its flagship events, the Big Bash League (BBL), beyond Australian shores by possibly staging a match in India next season, according to reports. The initiative is seen as part of CA’s broader plan to deepen engagement with the lucrative Indian market and bolster the league’s international appeal ahead of the anticipated sale of at least two of its eight franchises.
In recent weeks, senior CA officials reportedly traveled to India to assess the feasibility of holding an “offshore game,” with Chennai emerging as a potential venue. Sources suggest the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has already been approached with a proposal to host the match. While the Indian city is often associated with former India captain MS Dhoni and his formidable home record, no official confirmation has been released by either CA or local cricket authorities.
Talks And Strategic Considerations
According to the reports, CA’s delegation included key executives tasked with evaluating how a BBL fixture could work logistically outside Australia. It was noted that “Head of business operations Phil Rigby and head of competition development and strategy Margot Harley flew to India as discussions ramp up around the logistics of an offshore game.”
Part of the appeal for CA is expanding the BBL’s footprint in a country where cricket is a dominant sport and franchise leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) have massive followings and commercial success. Leveraging this interest could potentially drive new revenue streams for the BBL and strengthen commercial ties with Indian broadcasters, sponsors, and fans.
Another intriguing aspect of the discussions centers on the potential team that could participate in the India fixture. Reports have suggested that the Perth Scorchers, one of the most successful teams in BBL history, might be a natural choice for such a game. The reasoning includes their favourable time zone for TV audiences and openness from local officials at the Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) to consider investment from wealthy Indian business figures.
Approval And Future Prospects
Despite the forward momentum in talks, insiders caution that nothing has been finalized. Any plans to stage a BBL match in India would require approval from a number of stakeholders, including national governing bodies such as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and international broadcasters holding rights to the BBL.
The BBL is globally recognised as one of the premier domestic T20 competitions, with the Perth Scorchers having clinched the championship six times — more than any other team. Hosting a match in India would mark a significant milestone in the league’s history and could pave the way for further international fixtures in the future.
