The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most celebrated franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is facing a significant hurdle ahead of IPL 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed strict regulations, preventing CSK from practicing at their home ground, Chepauk Stadium. As a result, CSK have relocated their training operations to the CSK Academy.
Why Did BCCI Impose Restrictions?
The BCCI’s decision to restrict IPL franchises from using their home stadiums for practice stems from concerns over pitch quality. After consecutive Test series losses, the board has enforced a rule that limits stadium usage to domestic matches before the IPL season begins.
While many teams have already started their IPL preparations, CSK faces unique challenges due to their reliance on a single home venue. Unlike teams with access to multiple grounds, CSK must now find alternative solutions to fine-tune their squad before the tournament.
CSK’s Alternative: Training at CSK Academy
With Chepauk out of bounds, CSK has relocated its training sessions to the CSK Academy in Chennai. This facility offers state-of-the-art training infrastructure, allowing players to continue their preparations uninterrupted. Despite the setback, MS Dhoni, has wasted no time in getting back to training. Without other commitments, Dhoni has been an early presence at the academy, working closely with his teammates.
Adjusting to New Training Conditions
Practicing at an academy instead of a full-fledged stadium poses its own challenges. The difference in pitch conditions and stadium atmosphere can be significant. However, CSK’s management is ensuring that players get the best possible training environment.
CSK’s strength and conditioning team is working diligently to ensure that players remain in peak physical shape ahead of IPL 2025. Training at the academy is being structured to mimic match-day scenarios as closely as possible.
How Other IPL Teams Are Responding
While CSK has made the shift to their academy, other franchises are exploring different options. Some teams with access to multiple venues are rotating between practice grounds, while others are relying on their respective academies or partner facilities.

Silver Lining for CSK
However, CSK is known for its ability to adapt. The team has a strong support staff and leadership that ensures the players remain focused despite any setbacks. Training at the CSK Academy might even help players develop a more well-rounded skill set. CSK is expected to hold a few intensive training camps before the IPL season officially begins. These camps will focus on match simulations and fine-tuning strategies.
