Shikhar Dhawan has now been ruled out of the tournament due to a left thumb fracture. It is to be noted that Dhawan wasn”t a part of the game against Pakistan as the management already said that he is battling with an injury. However, sources reported that he is expected to recover by 4 weeks. Things aren”t as per plan as he is now ruled out as it consumes a lot of time to recover.
Rishabh Pant has now been named as the replacement for injured Dhawan. Pant flew to the United Kingdom a few days ago, but he was kept as a cover/backup for Dhawan. As Dhawan ha seen ruled out now, the team management has now sought permission to the BCCI for his inclusion. A formal letter from the BCCI is expected to be sent to the ICC regarding this replacement.
“Shikhar Dhawan has a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of his left hand. He will remain in cast until mid-July which rules him out of ICC World Cup,“ said Indian team Manager Sunil Subramanian.
Dhawan”s absence plays a major role in India”s chances as he has been one of the players to watch out for in the ICC tournaments. His roles in the champions trophy 2013,2017 and World Cup 2015 were ones to remember as he came out all guns blazing against the opposition. This would now mean that KL Rahul will continue to open with Rohit Sharma and either of Vijay Shankar /Rishabh Pant / Dinesh Karthik will have to take the formalities for number four position.
India will play their fifth game against Afghanistan on Saturday. Having still 5 matches on the cards, India will look to capitalize on the wins they have already now to make further progress in the tournament. Â
