Legendary South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has announced that he will not be returning as the bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. While Steyn will be stepping down from his role with SRH, he will continue his association with the Sunrisers franchise in their South African team, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, which competes in the SA20 league.
Steyn’s Departure from SRH Ahead of IPL 2025
Steyn, who has been a key figure in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s coaching setup, confirmed his departure from the team through a post on X (formerly Twitter). He expressed gratitude for his time with SRH, saying, “A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025.” The news comes as SRH prepares for the upcoming IPL auction, where they will look to revamp their squad. Steyn had played an instrumental role in shaping SRH’s bowling attack in previous seasons.
Continued Role with Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Despite stepping down from his position with SRH, Steyn will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league, where the team has enjoyed tremendous success. Under Steyn’s guidance, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won both editions of the SA20 tournament, and the fast bowling icon is eager to help the team achieve even greater success, stating, “Let’s try to make it three in a row.” His ongoing involvement with the South African franchise ensures that his coaching journey will continue on familiar turf.
James Franklin’s Role in Steyn’s Absence
Steyn’s absence from SRH was already felt during the last IPL season when he made himself unavailable for the team. During that time, former New Zealand cricketer James Franklin stepped in to fill the role of bowling coach. Franklin led SRH’s bowling unit through the 2024 season, in which the team qualified for the final. Despite Steyn’s absence, SRH’s campaign proved successful, demonstrating the franchise’s resilience and ability to adapt under different coaching leadership.
Steyn’s exit marks the end of a memorable chapter with SRH, but his legacy and impact on the team’s bowlers will remain strong.
