Former Australia batter Damien Martyn has been released from hospital as he continues to recover from meningitis. The 54-year-old was admitted on December 26 after being struck by a severe infection that required urgent medical attention. The condition was initially life-threatening, with Martyn placed in an induced coma and treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Encouragingly, the Australian great has shown a positive response to treatment and is steadily improving in what has been a remarkable recovery. His former teammate Adam Gilchrist, who has been regularly updating fans on Martyn’s condition, spoke about his health ahead of the final day of the 2025–26 Ashes on Kayo Sports, as quoted by India Today.
“It’s terrific and wonderful to know he’s back home, and his family express their gratitude and thanks for all the support. The word from the medical staff was that the ambulance officers who treated him as soon as they saw him could not have done it any more perfectly, which nipped the infection in the bud. He still has a bit of a journey to go. It was extreme, but it’s great news.”
Martyn was a key member of Australia’s all- conquering teams during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The right-handed batter played a crucial role in Australia’s flawless 2003 ODI World Cup campaign, producing a decisive unbeaten 88 off 84 balls in the final against India. He was also part of the squad that clinched the iconic 1999 ODI World Cup title.
“Almost A Miracle”: Mark Waugh Reacts To Damien Martyn’s Recovery
Another of Damien Martyn’s former teammates, Mark Waugh, described the progress in Martyn’s health as nothing short of a miracle. Martyn stands as Australia’s 14th-highest run-scorer in international cricket across formats, having amassed 9,872 runs in 279 matches, which include 18 centuries.
“It’s almost a miracle, really. He was looking in really bad shape when he was in the ICU,” said Waugh (via the aforementioned source).
