David Warner eventually called off his Test career after announcing retirement on the fourth day of the final Test match against Pakistan played at SCG on 6th January 2024. He revealed that wanted to be remembered as exciting and entertaining.
Before the final test match, Warner decided to announce his retirement from One-day international cricket. He was a part of the winning team that won the 2015 ODI World Cup and the 2023 World Cup and played against host India at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 19th November 2023.
Warner was the backbone of the Australian team across formats for a quite long time.
“[Would like to be remembered as] exciting, entertaining, and I hope I put a smile on everyone’s face with the way that I played and hopefully the young kids out there can follow in my footsteps. White-ball cricket to Test cricket. It’s the pinnacle of our sport. So keep working hard to play the red-ball game because it’s entertaining as well.”
Chasing down 130 runs in the 4th innings against Pakistan, Warner looked impressive scoring 57 off 75 deliveries, and took Australia home to win. He was dismissed via review for LBW as the umpire called not out but on review, it was overturned to out. The crowd at SCG gave a standing ovation. Australian team registered a comprehensive 8-wicket win to whitewash Pakistan by 3-0.
Before this match, Warner decided to hang boots from 50 over format. He also said that if needed, he would play in the 2025 Champions Trophy that would be played in Pakistan.
“It’s pretty much a dream come true. Win 3-0 and cap off what’s been a great 18 months to two years for the Australian cricket team. On the back of the World Test Championship win, Ashes series draw, and then the World Cup and then to come here and finish 3-0 is an outstanding achievement and I’m just proud to be with a bunch of great cricketers here,” he explained.
