Australian batter David Warner is set to retire from International cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup. He confirmed his retirement plans on Friday, February 9 after the first T20I against the West Indies in Hobart. The 2024 T20 World Cup will take place in June later this year with the USA and West Indies as hosts.
David Warner played a crucial role for Australia at the top of the order in the first T20I against West Indies. He slammed 70 runs from 36 deliveries, with twelve boundaries and a six at a strike rate of 194.44. Australia managed to put on 213 runs and eventually won the match by 11 runs. Warner won the Player of the Match award.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, David Warner expressed that he is looking forward to the upcoming six months. He added that he wants to finish after the T20 World Cup 2024. Warner said,
“Pleasing to get the win on the board. Was a nice wicket to bat on and you have to make the most of it. Feel great and refreshed, I’m pumped. I want to play the T20 World Cup and finish there and it’s a good journey we’ve got going for the next 6 months. Pretty much the same squad going to New Zealand so we must win there as well.”

Veteran batter David Warner made his T20I debut for Australia in Melbourne in 2009 against South Africa. He has played 100 T20Is for them, scoring just 2964 runs at an average of 33.30 and a strike rate of 142.22. He has scored a century in twenty-five fifties. The left-handed batter was part of the Australian squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup. He has led his country in nine T20I matches and has a win percentage of 88.88, winning eight matches. Warner earlier this year retired from One Day International cricket on January 1 and from Test cricket on January 6. He played his final Test at his home ground the Sydney Cricket Ground.
