The Delhi Capitals have named Rishabh Pant as their new skipper for IPL 2021. Pant will be replacing Shreyas Iyer as the captain of DC after the franchise confirmed that he has been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury. The Delhi Capitals franchise made the official announcement across all their official accounts on social media. In the last two season under Iyer, DC have qualified for the IPL playoffs and in the last season, they played their first-ever final against eventual champions Mumbai Indians.
Rishabh Pant announced the new skipper of Delhi Capitals of IPL 2021
After Iyer was doubtful for the IPL 2021 season along with Pant names such as Steve Smith, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane were also in contention to be the captain of DC. The franchise once again backed a youngster instead of experienced players in the side and appointed Pant as the new skipper. Well, this is certainly not a surprise as Pant in the last few months has taken his game to another level in international cricket.
In the Test series against Australia and then in the home series against England, Pant showed great maturity and scored match-winning runs consistently. The 23-year-old is now all set to captain Delhi Capitals after Iyer sustained a freakish shoulder injury during the first ODI against England in Pune. The first assignment for Pant as captain will come against Chennai Super Kings on April 10 where he will be up against his idol MS Dhoni.
“Rishabh Pant will be our Captain for IPL 2021. Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming season following his injury in Ind vs Eng series and Rishabh Pant will lead the team in his absence”, wrote Delhi Capitals on Instagram.
