The Delhi High Court has refused to stop the trial court proceedings against Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir. The case will move forward as Gambhir and his foundation face allegations of unlawfully distributing COVID-19 medicines during the pandemic.
His plea for relief was turned down, and the court did not entertain his request to quash the FIR. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna remarked that mere name-dropping would not influence the matter. Gambhir’s counsel highlighted his pandemic contributions, citing his role as ex-MP, captain, and provider of oxygen and medicines.
“Had you made a simple request, I would have considered it. You are trying to tell me so many things. Firstly, the name (of the party), his credentials, the work done by him… You are trying name dropping as if it will work in the court. It does not work,” the judge was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
However, his counsel sought relief since the trial court hearing is scheduled for September 8. The High Court noted that granting a stay would mean the parties would stop appearing, the investigation would come to a halt, and the case itself would ultimately be dismissed.
The Drug Control Department lodged a complaint against Gautam Gambhir, his foundation, and its CEO Aprajita Singh. His mother, Seema, and wife, Natasha, were also booked under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
Gambhir To Join Team India For 2025 Asia Cup
As head coach of the Indian men’s senior cricket team, Gautam Gambhir will accompany the squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, starting September 9 in the UAE. He had been on a short break following the recently concluded away Test series against England, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
With the 2026 T20 World Cup on the horizon, the Asia Cup will serve as the starting point of India’s preparations for the global tournament. Gambhir will be eager to build on his success as coach, having already guided India to the 2025 Champions Trophy title in Dubai, marking his first major white-ball triumph.
