The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced that the highly anticipated Dwarka Stadium is scheduled to commence construction by the end of 2024. This cutting-edge facility to become a key sports venue in the capital, is on an expedited timeline, with a target completion date set for September 2027.
The Dwarka Stadium project, officially launched by former Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in September 2022, marks a significant development in Delhi’s urban landscape. Spanning 50.4 acres in Dwarka Sector 19B, the stadium will be developed through a public-private partnership between the DDA and real estate developer Omaxe. This partnership represents the DDA’s inaugural venture into sports infrastructure under such a collaborative model.
The centerpiece of the complex will be an international stadium designed for both cricket and football, with a seating capacity of 30,000. The stadium’s scope extends beyond major sports events, incorporating a diverse range of facilities. According to a DDA official, the stadium will feature an integrated multisport arena, including an international cricket-cum-football stadium, indoor sports facilities with a capacity for 2,000 spectators, a clubhouse offering at least 3,000 memberships, and amenities for swimming, tennis, badminton, squash, and table tennis.
In addition to the 3,000 clubhouse memberships, the stadium will be accessible to the general public. The official highlighted that the facilities will operate on a pay-and-play basis, with a minimum of 25% of the facility’s capacity available for non-members.
The total project, estimated to cost INR 350 crore, aims to be more than just a sports venue. It will also include around 350,000 square feet of commercial space, featuring retail outlets, a hotel, and office areas, all available on a 99-year lease.
The concessionaire emphasized that with Delhi’s population exceeding 33 million, the city has long been in need of a premier cricket stadium. The new international cricket-cum-football stadium is expected to host numerous international events, adding to Delhi’s reputation as a major sporting destination.
