Devdutt Padikkal Hopes To Have A Good Time In Red-Ball Cricket

Devdutt Padikkal, one of India’s most promising young batters, is eager to make up for the time he lost away from competitive cricket. His recent outing in the Duleep Trophy semi-final gave him the much-needed opportunity to spend quality time in the middle.

Representing South Zone against North Zone, Padikkal struck a composed 57, a knock that not only stabilized the innings but also helped him regain rhythm in the red-ball format. Having been away from first-class cricket for some time, he acknowledged that the innings was crucial to rediscover his touch and rebuild his confidence.

The 24-year-old admitted he felt rusty, particularly in the longer format, as he had not played much red-ball cricket recently. Reflecting on his dismissal, he said he attempted “too many shots,” which stemmed from a lack of recent experience in grinding out longer innings. Still, the half-century reaffirmed his ability to adapt, and more importantly, gave him the satisfaction of spending significant time at the crease.

Opportunity with India A

Padikkal’s timely return to form has earned him a place in the India A squad for the upcoming home series against Australia A. The two unofficial Tests, starting September 16 in Lucknow, will serve as a crucial platform for him to prove his readiness at the next level. India A tours are often seen as gateways to the senior national team, and Padikkal understands the significance of the chance presented to him.

By performing well in these fixtures, the left-handed opener has the opportunity to push his case for a return to the senior Indian squad. His selection itself is an indication that the selectors still regard him as an important prospect for the future. The matches against Australia A, known for their competitive intensity, will test his temperament, technique, and hunger for big scores.

Aiming Beyond a Debut

While many young cricketers aspire to simply make their debut for India, Padikkal has made it clear that his ambitions stretch much further. He stressed that his ultimate goal is not just to wear the Indian jersey once, but to establish himself as a consistent performer and help the national team achieve victories at the highest level. “It’s not about just making my debut. The aim is to keep playing for India and to keep winning for India,” he said with determination.

This mindset underlines his maturity and long-term vision. With renewed focus, regained match practice, and opportunities lined up, Devdutt Padikkal is determined to turn the lost months into a launchpad for his comeback.
