Dewald Brevis’ Record-Breaking Knock Helps South Africa To Level The Series

For Dewald Brevis, the moment of transformation came late in 2024. On 28 December 2024, he made a decision that would reshape his approach to cricket.

Since 28 December 2024, that’s really where I made that commitment,” Brevis told reporters after his national record 125 not out at Marrara Stadium. “I’ve got a few people, and they know who they are, who I trust. The main thing was to be the original Dewald … every ball, wherever it is, to watch it and to hit it”

This wasn’t just about aggressive batting—it was about reconnecting with his instincts and playing the fearless cricket that had first made him a rising star. Through that period, he leaned on a small circle of trusted mentors, balancing their advice with his own intuition. Even the mistakes he made along the way became valuable lessons, giving him the mental clarity to play with complete freedom.

From the Sidelines to the Spotlight

Brevis’s early career promised much. Nicknamed “Baby AB” for his dynamic shot-making, he lit up the IPL at just 18 and debuted for South Africa at 20. But the years that followed saw him drift out of the national setup, his international opportunities limited and inconsistent. This spell away from the top stage tested his resilience.

The second T20I against Australia in Darwin marked his emphatic return. In just his ninth T20I, Brevis produced a masterclass that reminded the cricketing world of his talent. His innings wasn’t simply a statistical milestone—it was a declaration that the “original Dewald” was back, sharper and hungrier than ever.

A Knock That Made History

Walking in with South Africa at 57/3, Brevis wasted no time asserting control. His century came off just 41 balls, the second-fastest in South Africa’s T20I history, behind only David Miller’s 35-ball effort. He finished unbeaten on 125 from 56 deliveries, laced with 12 fours and 8 sixes. His hitting was clean, often straight down the ground, and one blow off Sean Abbott sailed an enormous 103 metres.

Partnering with Tristan Stubbs, Brevis added 126 runs in just 9.3 overs, powering South Africa to 218/7, their highest total against Australia in T20Is. The hosts, under pressure from the start, folded for 165 despite a fighting effort from Tim David. South Africa’s 53-run win not only levelled the series but also ended Australia’s unbeaten T20I run.

For Brevis, the innings was more than just numbers—it was proof that embracing his authentic style and trusting his instincts could deliver spectacular results. In Darwin, the “original Dewald” didn’t just return; he took centre stage.
