New Zealand all-rounder Doug Bracewell has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending a professional career that spanned more than 14 years. The 35-year-old represented his country across formats and remained a familiar and respected name in both international and domestic cricket. His decision marks the conclusion of a journey filled with determination, notable achievements, and memorable moments for New Zealand cricket fans.
Injury Concerns Lead To Retirement Decision
Bracewell’s decision to step away from the game was largely influenced by a long-standing rib injury that had troubled him in recent months. The recurring issue kept him out of action for Central Districts and made it increasingly difficult to cope with the physical demands of professional cricket. After careful consideration, Bracewell chose to prioritise his long-term well-being, bringing an end to his playing days. His retirement reflects the tough reality many cricketers face when injuries begin to limit performance and recovery.
International Career Highlighted By Historic Feat
Doug Bracewell made his international debut for New Zealand in 2011 and went on to feature in all three formats of the game. Over the course of his career, he played 28 Test matches, 21 One Day Internationals, and 20 T20 Internationals. One of the most iconic moments of his career came early, in just his third Test appearance. Bracewell produced sensational match figures of 9 for 60 against Australia, guiding New Zealand to a famous Test victory on Australian soil.
That win was New Zealand’s first Test success in Australia in 26 years and remains their most recent triumph there. In Test cricket, Bracewell finished with 74 wickets at an average of 38.82, including two five-wicket hauls. He also claimed 26 wickets in ODIs and 20 in T20Is, contributing with both ball and bat whenever called upon.
Valuable Domestic Record And Lasting Legacy
Beyond international cricket, Bracewell was a key performer for Central Districts in New Zealand’s domestic competitions. Across formats, he scored over 4,000 first-class runs and took more than 400 wickets, highlighting his value as a genuine all-rounder.
Known for his resilience, work ethic, and team-first attitude, Bracewell earned the respect of teammates and supporters alike. As Doug Bracewell retires from professional cricket, he leaves behind a legacy defined by perseverance, commitment, and unforgettable performances. His contributions will continue to hold a special place in New Zealand’s modern cricket history.
