ECB Plans To Request English Players To Leave IPL Ahead Of Schedule To Focus On T20 World Cup Preparations- Reports

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is expected to request its players to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) before the playoffs to prioritize preparations for the 2024 T20 World Cup, scheduled in the Caribbean and the USA in June, just after the IPL season.

Under the leadership of Jos Buttler, the team had a disastrous campaign in the subcontinent while trying to defend their ODI World Cup title. England ended up in seventh place in the points table, narrowly securing qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The ECB aims to prevent a repeat of a disappointing performance and wants its players to concentrate on defending their T20 World Cup title. England has a five-match T20I series against Pakistan scheduled from May 22 to May 30.

Although the official IPL 2024 schedule is pending, the playoffs and final typically occur in the latter part of May. The ECB prefers to have its players return in time to participate in the lead-up to the tournament instead of selecting less experienced squads for these preparations.

England had a limited number of ODIs against New Zealand and Ireland in their lead-up to the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Several English players, led by captain Jos Buttler, are currently participating in the IPL. Other notable stars in the league include Harry Brook, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali.

Archer is still on the path to recovery after a setback in rehabilitation, and Stokes is anticipated to sit out IPL 2024. The accomplished all-rounder is reportedly set for knee surgery to ensure fitness for the five-match Test series against India in early 2024.

England’s preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup will kick off with a five-match T20I series against the West Indies, starting on December 13.

The mini-auction for IPL 2024 is set to happen on December 19 in Dubai

The upcoming IPL 2024 mini-auction, scheduled for December 19 in Dubai, marks the first instance of the IPL auction being held overseas. Franchises will have a designated period to finalize their retained and released player lists, and there will be an augmented purse amount for the teams.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) currently hold the title of defending IPL champions, having emerged victorious in the IPL 2023 final against the Gujarat Titans (GT).
