The fifth Test between India and England has been hit by racial abuse allegations by the Indian fans at the Edgbaston Cricket Stadium in Birmingham. On day four of the Test, a group of Indian fans was cheering for their side, when they faced racial abuse from England. The Cheif Executive at the Edgbaston, Stuart Cain, has issued an apology in the matter

The Indian fans took to social media to share their experience. Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq, who flagged several of the allegations, highlighted the issue through his Twitter account. Rafiq recently brought to light the culture of institutional racism at Yorkshire club. On Monday, he retweeted a tweet by a fan stating,

“Racist behavior at @Edgbaston towards Indian fans in block 22 Eric Hollies. People calling us Curry C**ts and paki bas****s. We reported it to the stewards and showed them the culprits at least 10 times but no response and all we were told is to sit in our seats. @ECB_cricket”

The England and Wales Cricket Board, replied to the post,  “We’re very sorry to hear what you’ve experienced and are in contact with colleagues at Edgbaston who will investigate.”

Gutted by the racial abuse reports: Stuart Cain, Chief Executive, Edgbaston

The Warwickshire and the England Cricket Board are investigating reports of racist abuse during the fifth Test. They have released a statement condemning racial abuse. The Chief Executive, Stuart Cain said that he has personally spoken to the complainants. He stated that they will address the issue, once they gather all the facts.

“I’m gutted by these reports as we’re working hard to make Edgbaston a safe, welcoming environment for all. Having seen the initial tweets, I’ve spoken personally to the gentleman who raised them. We’re now speaking to the stewards in this area to establish what happened. Nobody should be subject to any form of abuse at Edgbaston. So, once we’ve got all the facts, we will make sure this issue is addressed swiftly,” stated Stuart Cain.
