ENG vs IND 4th Test: 5 Major Records Set By Indian Batters In Manchester Test

The fourth Test between England and India kicked off on Wednesday, July 23, at Old Trafford in Manchester. England won the toss once again and chose to bowl first. India made a steady start, with openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal laying a solid platform.

But the momentum shifted as both openers fell in quick succession, allowing England to claw their way back. Making his return to the XI in place of Karun Nair, Sai Sudharsan impressed with a composed knock of 61. Rishabh Pant looked in good touch as well, scoring 37 before a nasty blow forced him to retire hurt.

At stumps on Day 1, India had reached 264 for 4 in 83 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur both unbeaten on 19. With both sides having their moments, the contest remains evenly poised heading into Day 2. Here are five batting records India set on Day 1 of the fourth Test vs England.

#1 Second Indian Opener To Score 1000+ Runs In Overseas Tests

KL Rahul has become only the second Indian opener to score over 1000 Test runs in overseas conditions. The first to achieve this feat was Sunil Gavaskar, who did it on three separate tours—against the West Indies, England, and Pakistan. Rahul has now accumulated 1035 runs in England from 13 Test matches, averaging 41.40.

His tally includes four centuries and two fifties. With this milestone, he also entered an exclusive group of Indian batters to have scored over 1000 Test runs in England, joining the ranks of Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli.

#2 Joint-Second Fastest Indian To Score 1000 Test Runs Against England

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal notched a fifty (58) on Day 1 and, in doing so, crossed the 1000-run mark in Tests against England. He became the joint-second fastest Indian to reach this milestone in the format against the English side. Jaiswal reached the landmark in just 16 innings, equalling the record set by former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin.

Only Rahul Dravid has achieved it faster, getting to 1000 runs in just 15 innings. Jaiswal now has 1003 Test runs against England, including three centuries and five half-centuries.

#3 Second-Best Opening Stand For India In Manchester Test History

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul put together a 94-run partnership for the opening wicket on Day 1 of the fourth Test, marking the second-highest opening stand for India in Tests at Manchester. The record for the highest opening partnership at this venue still belongs to Vijay Merchant and Syed Mushtaq Ali, who shared a 203-run stand in the second innings of the 1936 Manchester Test.

#4 Third Instance Of Trio Scoring 400+ Runs For India In An Away Test Series

KL Rahul’s 46 on Day 1 took his run tally in the ongoing series to 421 from seven innings, placing him third among Indian batters. Only Rishabh Pant (462 runs) and Shubman Gill (619 runs) have scored more for the visitors in this series. This marks just the third time that three Indian batters have crossed 400 runs in a single overseas Test series.

The first instance was in 1977 during the Australia tour, when Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, and Gundappa Viswanath achieved the feat. The second came in the 2003–04 Australia series with Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Virender Sehwag.

#5 First Overseas Wicketkeeper To Score 1000+ Test Runs In England

Rishabh Pant has become the first overseas wicketkeeper-batter to surpass 1000 Test runs in England. The left-hander has now amassed 1018 runs from 13 Tests in the country, averaging 44.26, with four centuries and four fifties to his name.

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni ranks second among visiting wicketkeepers in terms of Test runs in England, with a total of 778. Notably, two of Pant’s four centuries in England have come during the current series.
