ENG vs IND: Joe Root Surpasses Jayasuriya, Achieves A Huge Feat

England batter Joe Root reached a major milestone in his career by surpassing Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya to become the ninth-highest run-scorer in international cricket. This achievement came on Day 2 of the first Test match against India at Leeds.

Root scored 28 runs in 58 balls with two boundaries before getting out to Jasprit Bumrah, who dismissed him for the 10th time in 25 innings. Root now has a total of 21,053 runs in 366 international matches and 479 innings, with an impressive average of 49.30. He has scored 54 centuries and 112 fifties, with his best score being 262. With this record, Root continues to be England’s all-time leading run-scorer across all formats of the game.

Sanath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan great, had held the ninth spot earlier with 21,032 runs in 651 innings at an average of 34.14. He had 42 centuries and 103 half-centuries to his name, and his best score was a remarkable 340.

Root’s rise in the rankings puts him among the top cricket legends, with only a few ahead of him now. Sitting at the very top is India’s Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored a record 34,357 runs in 782 innings with an average of 48.52, including 100 centuries and 164 fifties. His highest score was an unbeaten 248.

Breakdown of Root’s Career Across Formats

In Test matches, Joe Root has scored 13,034 runs in 154 games and 280 innings, averaging 50.71. He has hit 36 centuries and 65 half-centuries, with a top score of 262. In ODIs, he has made 7,126 runs in 180 matches at an average of 49.14, including 18 centuries and 42 fifties.

His T20I stats include 893 runs in 32 matches and 30 innings, with an average of 35.72 and a strike rate of 126.30. He has scored five fifties in the shortest format, and his highest score is 90 not out. These numbers highlight his consistency and versatility across all three formats.

Match Situation at Stumps on Day 2

At the end of Day 2, England were 209/3, still trailing by 262 runs. Ollie Pope remained unbeaten on 100, while Harry Brook was at the crease on 0. Ben Duckett’s 62 runs and his century partnership with Pope helped steady the innings after Zak Crawley’s early dismissal.

Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler for India with three wickets but lacked support from the other end. Earlier, India had posted a huge total of 471, thanks to centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. India were comfortably placed at 430/4, but a late collapse triggered by Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue restricted them.
