India Test captain Shubman Gill played a marathon innings in the second Test against England at Birmingham, scoring a phenomenal 269 runs from 387 deliveries. His effort, which featured 30 boundaries and 3 sixes, helped India pile up a commanding total of 587 in the first innings.
Despite the brilliance of the knock, Gill shared a funny yet honest reaction from his father, who reminded him that he fell short of a historic triple century.
In a video shared by the BCCI on Instagram, Gill reacted to congratulatory messages from his parents. His father said, “Well played, I enjoyed watching your batting, and my heart was at peace. You were batting like in your U‑16 and U‑19 days — I felt very proud.” His mother added warmly, “Felt amazing watching you bat, keep going, God bless you.”
But Gill also revealed a humorous comment his father made after the match, saying, “It means a lot coming from him. But he also told me I missed my triple century. Hopefully, we’ll end this match on a great note.”
Family and Friendship: The Core of His Cricketing Journey
Beyond the runs and records, Gill shared what truly matters to him as a cricketer. He mentioned that there are only two people whose opinions he deeply values when it comes to his performance — his father and his best friend. This emotional anchor has been central to his cricketing growth.
“This message means a lot to me. I think, growing up, I played almost all of my cricket for my dad, in the sense that it was because of him that I started playing. And the only person besides him is my best friend, whom I practised with. These are the only two people, when it comes to my cricket, that I care about and that I listen to,” Gill explained.
While he did not name his best friend, it’s widely believed to be fellow cricketer Abhishek Sharma, with whom he shares a close bond and has been seen frequently.
Focus Shifts to Leadership
With the bat, Gill delivered a statement. Now, as captain, his leadership will be under the spotlight. India hopes his innings has set a strong enough platform to put pressure on England. As the Test progresses, Gill’s decision-making and field placements will be vital in steering India toward a positive result.
