During the third day of the fifth Test between India and England at The Oval, Google CEO Sundar Pichai made an unexpected appearance in the commentary box and shared a memorable anecdote involving Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar.
He shared that he met Sunil Gavaskar in the hallway and said that he had a poster of the former cricketer on his wall as a child. Pichai also mentioned that he was a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar.
“I just ran into Sunny in the hallway. I used to have a poster of him growing up. Gavaskar was the main one. I was a big Sachin fan. But the irony was, I couldn’t watch him when he was batting. I was so nervous he would get out, so I never watched him much, but really used to enjoy watching him,” he said.
Sundar Pichai Shares His Thoughts On India’s Performance In 5th Test
While Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja were at the crease on Day 3, Sundar Pichai joined the commentary team. During his stint, the Google CEO remarked that the Indian team would aim to take the total beyond 350 runs.
“As an Indian fan, you are pushing for the score to get above 350, and I think they may get there, looks promising,” he said.
India piled up a massive 396 in their second innings, setting England a target of 374. Both Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja notched up half-centuries, scoring 53 runs each. Sundar’s aggressive innings—53 off just 46 balls with four fours and four sixes, helped stretch the lead beyond 350.
Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered a superb century, scoring 118 off 164 deliveries with 14 boundaries and two sixes. He was ably assisted by nightwatchman Akash Deep, who registered his maiden Test fifty with a solid 66 off 94 balls, which included 12 fours.
