England Coach Fires Back At Indian Skipper Shubman Gill Over Lord’s Last-Over Controversy

England bowling coach Tim Southee took a sly jab at Indian skipper Shubman Gill following the latter’s heated confrontation with Zak Crawley during the tense final over on Day 3 at Lord’s. Questioning Gill’s outrage over Crawley’s alleged time-wasting tactics, the New Zealand veteran sarcastically referred to how the Indian captain was seen getting a massage on the field during Day 2.

Earlier, after England dismissed India for 387 in their first innings on Saturday, July 12, their openers were required to face a brief and tricky session before stumps. England’s second innings reportedly began 90 seconds late. Crawley stepped away during Bumrah’s run-up and called the physio, limiting England to one over before stumps.

Crawley’s actions visibly frustrated Gill, who reportedly lashed out at the England opener, telling him to “grow some f***ing balls.” The situation escalated with finger-pointing between the two players, and some Indian teammates joined in by sarcastically clapping at Crawley as tensions boiled over.

England Coach Shrugs Off Final Over Tension, Says It’s All In The Game

Speaking after the conclusion of Day 3 at Lord’s, England’s bowling coach brushed off the tension in the final over, describing it as just part and parcel of the game. He remarked:

“It’s always exciting to see both sides animated towards the end. I’m not sure what they were complaining about when Shubman Gill was lying down getting a massage in the middle of the day yesterday. It’s obviously part of the game [when] you’re near the end of the day. It’s an exciting way to finish the day.”

Gill was spotted lying down and receiving treatment during India’s fielding stint on Day 2 at Lord’s. In a deadpan tone, Tim Southee quipped that Zak Crawley would be “assessed overnight” after being “hit,” and further added:

“Both sides have played some good cricket and in a good spirit, and tonight was just a bit of energy towards the end of the day. It’s been a long three days, and it was good to see the energy still there from both sides.”

India and England each scored 387 runs in their respective first innings of the Lord’s Test. The home side will continue their second innings on Day 4 at 2 without loss.
