The England cricket team is having a forgettable run in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. They have lost four matches on the trot, the recent against India by 100 runs on Sunday, October 30 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Owing to their dismal run, the Jos Buttler-led team is at risk of missing out on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

England ranks 10th in the points table of the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023. They have two points from six matches, with five losses. They might miss out on qualifying for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 if they do not make a strong comeback. The top seven-ranked teams from the ongoing World Cup will qualify directly for the Champions. Meanwhile, the hosts, Pakistan will be the eighth team in the tournament.

Looking at the current scenario, England needs a massive turnaround to qualify for the 2025 event. They have three matches left in the tournament. Their recent loss against India has further hampered their chances. However, they need to win all three to make a case for qualification in the World Cup knockouts as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy.

England coach Matthew Mott reveals he learned about the qualification rule during a match against India

England coach Matthew Motts wasn’t aware of the qualification rule for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He revealed he learned about it during the ICC ODI World Cup match against India. He expressed that the rule change will not affect England’s approach in the tournament. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Matthew Motts said,

“About an hour and a half ago. Well, the ICC does change the rules quite a bit with qualification and to be honest I don’t think it would affect in any way the way we’ve played in this tournament so it’s not a big deal.”

England will take on Australia in their next ICC ODI World Cup 2023 match on November 4. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the clash. Australia is on a four-match winning streak in the tournament.
