English batsman Alastair Cook has announced that next test at the oval will be his last. Acclaimed as the greatest English batsman ever, the leftie holds several records to his name in the longer formats.
It is to be noted that Cook occupies the sixth position in terms of total runs scored in tests. With a total of 12254 which includes 32 centuries, he tops the chart to represent maximum tests for the English side (160 till now).
Cook as a captain, has had great memories winning overseas. Leading the side in 59 tests he had a balanced win-loss percentage. The sweet ones include winning away series in India(2012) and Southafrica (2016). However, 2013 Ashes down under really proved to be a forgettable one in his career as the side succumbed to a 5-0 defeat at the kangaroo land.
He quit his captaincy after losing the series against India in 2016. This announcement came as a shocker for the English fans as they termed it as an “unprecedented” one. However, he hasn”t had a greater time on the field barring a couple of double centuries after resignation.
Cook started his career as it India at Nagpur in 2006 and he will be playing his farewell against the same team. On his retirement note, Cook thanked his fellow mates for helping him out in toughest times and his mentor Graham Gooch. He mentioned this decision as a “tough” one and said that it would be the right time for a youngster to shine for the three lions.
“After much thought and deliberation over the last few months I have decided to announce my retirement from international cricket at the end of this Test series against India Although it is a sad day, I can do so with a big smile on my face knowing I have given everything and there is nothing left in the tank, “said Cook after calling a time on his career. He added that he will continue playing for Essex.
Cook, hadn”t created a significant impact on the opposition in the ongoing series. His fans are really desperate to watch him end his career on a high at the Oval. The next test will be played from September 7, Friday. In all possibilities, England will try to bid a fitting farewell to their ex-captain.
