England ended the first day of the first test match at 285 for 9 after being in a strong position played at Birmingham just finished a few moments ago. The hosts looked good for a big total but the Indian team fought back picking up 6 wickets in the final session.

England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat first. Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma shared the new ball for India. Ishant Sharma bowled good line and lengths while Umesh Yadav struggled. The Indian captain Kohli bought on Ravichandran Ashwin and dismissed Cook for 13 runs. Both Jennings and Cook added 26 runs for the first wicket.

The England captain Joe Root and Jennings steadied the innings with a solid partnership for the 2nd wicket. Despite Indian bowlers creating pressure, both Jennings and Root showed good technique. England went into lunch with the score of 83 for 1.

After the lunch break, it was good bowling display by Indian bowlers with superb line and lengths. Mohammed Shami dismissed Jennings for 42. Jennings and Root added 72 runs for the 2nd wicket. It was Shami again who another wicket of David Malan to put England under pressure at 112 for 3. The captain Joe Root steadied the innings reaching his half-century off 107 balls.

The Indian bowlers made life tough for Joe Root and Bairstow. At the end of the 2nd session, the hosts England ended on 163 for 3. Mohammed Shami was the pick of bowlers with 2 wickets.

Both Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root began on an aggressive note after the tea break. Bairstow reached his half-century off 72 balls. When things were going well for England, Joe Root committed a bad second run to be dismissed for 80. Umesh Yadav dismissed well set Jonny Bairstow for well made 80.

Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the dangerous Jos Buttler for 0 to bring back India into the game. The Indian bowlers restricted England batsmen after Joe Root wicket. The Indian off-spinner R Ashwin dismissed Ben Stokes for 21 to put hosts under pressure.

Adil Rashid and Sam Curran added 35 runs for the 8th wicket. Ishant Sharma dismissed Adil Rashid for 13. Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Stuart Broad to leave England in big trouble. Sam Curran remained not out on 24.
