“Experience alone may no longer guarantee selection” – Ajit Agarkar On Rohit And Kohli’s Participation In 2027 ODI World Cup

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar shared his candid thoughts on the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s ODI setup during an interview with NDTV at the World Summit 2025. When asked whether the two stalwarts would feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Agarkar admitted, “It’s difficult to say.”

He explained that while both players have been outstanding ambassadors of Indian cricket and continue to perform, long-term planning requires flexibility. “Right now, both are part of the setup.

But four years is a long time in international cricket,” he said. Agarkar emphasized that the selectors have to think not only about current form but also about building a balanced squad that can compete strongly in the next cycle.

Balancing Experience and Youth in India’s Roadmap

Agarkar acknowledged the immense contribution of both senior batters, calling them “invaluable assets” who continue to inspire younger players. However, he was realistic about the challenges of age and the pace of modern cricket. “We all know what Virat and Rohit bring to the team, but as selectors we also need to look ahead,” he noted.

The chief selector added that selection consistency depends on form, fitness, and domestic cricket participation. “We have made it clear that whenever players are free, they should be playing domestic cricket. That keeps them sharp and competitive,” he explained. Agarkar also hinted that while the veterans’ experience is vital, “experience alone may no longer guarantee selection.”

The ongoing transition within Indian cricket means more young players are being tested for future roles. Agarkar mentioned that identifying players early and giving them sufficient exposure will help maintain continuity. He also pointed out that the 2027 World Cup team composition will depend heavily on performance trends in the next two years.

Leadership Transition and Team Strategy

Agarkar also addressed India’s captaincy transition, confirming that Shubman Gill has taken over as ODI captain. He remarked, “It’s practically impossible to have three different captains for three formats just in terms of planning and consistency.” The chief selector said the goal was to ensure smooth succession while maintaining team balance.

He concluded by praising Kohli and Rohit’s professionalism and commitment, adding, “What they have been doing for years is scoring runs, and I don’t think that will change.” Yet, he acknowledged that India’s 2027 plans depend on collective readiness and future performance, not past laurels.
