South African cricket star Faf du Plessis, at 40, has embarked on what he calls the “last chapter” of his illustrious IPL career. Having won two IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings in 2018 and 2021, he now joins Delhi Capitals in pursuit of their maiden championship.
Despite moving from Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he led for three seasons, to Delhi after the November player auction, du Plessis remains enthusiastic about the fresh challenge. “Lots of life left in the old dog,” he remarked after scoring 29 off 18 balls in Delhi’s thrilling one-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants. He views this transition as another exciting phase in his career, eager to make an impact with his new team.
Age Is Just a Number
Du Plessis joins an elite group of cricketers proving that age is not a barrier to success in the IPL. Chennai Super Kings’ legend M.S. Dhoni, at 43, continues to be an integral part of his team, famously stating, “Even if I’m in a wheelchair, they’ll pull me along.” Similarly, Indian stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, at 36 and 37 respectively, continue to defy expectations and perform at the highest level. Du Plessis, known for his fitness and leadership, hopes to make a lasting impression in what may be his final IPL stint.

Impact of New IPL Rules
Delhi Capitals’ match against Lucknow showcased the influence of the IPL’s impact player rule, introduced in 2023. The regulation allows teams to substitute a player at any time, often swapping a bowler for a batsman to boost their chances of chasing high totals. Ashutosh Sharma, Delhi’s impact player, played a crucial role in their victory, smashing an unbeaten 66 off 31 balls after the team struggled at 65-5.
While some cricketers have criticized the rule for favoring batsmen, du Plessis acknowledges its game-changing potential, stating, “That’s why the new rule is there—when you think the game is dead and buried, someone comes on and plays like that.” As he nears the final stretch of his career, du Plessis remains determined to make the most of his time with Delhi Capitals, contributing to their quest for IPL glory.
