Fans Chant “Gautam Gambhir Hai Hai” As India Collapse Again Against South Africa

The series between India national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team ended in disaster for India, as the visitors trounced the hosts 2–0 in the two-Test series — a dominant sweep capped by a humiliating 408-run demolition in the second Test. The defeat marked India’s heaviest home Test loss by runs, and fueled massive outrage among fans.

During the match in Guwahati, spectators erupted in chants demanding the removal of head coach Gautam Gambhir — repeatedly shouting “Gautam Gambhir hai hai” as frustration boiled over.

Under Gambhir’s watch, the Indian Test side has struggled badly at home. What once was a fortress for India in red-ball cricket has become vulnerable, with poor results piling up against major teams.

The fans’ reaction was as much an expression of anger at the performance as it was at the deteriorating credibility of India’s Test side under current leadership.

Collapse Under Pressure: What Went Wrong on the Field

In Guwahati, South Africa’s batters laid the groundwork for their win with a formidable first-innings total of 489. On the third day, India — having elected to chase — completely crumbled.

Their batting order couldn’t withstand the pressure: most of the top and middle order fell cheaply, undermined by disciplined bowling and poor shot selection. Crucially, the stand-in captain (in the absence of regular skipper) played a reckless shot under pressure, compounding the collapse.

Critics also pointed at the team’s preparation and selection strategy. The choice of playing XI came under fire, with many questioning the frequent chopping and changing, including the exclusion of seasoned players like Axar Patel.

A pitch earlier described as a “road” — expected to be benign — instead produced dire results for India, as seamers and spinners exploited its uneven bounce and movement effectively.

Leadership & Selection Under Scrutiny

The backlash hasn’t been limited to fans: former players and cricket experts have also publicly criticized Gambhir. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, a former captain and ex-chief selector, condemned the continual rotation of players and questioned the lack of consistency. He didn’t mince words, saying the approach smacked of “trial and error” rather than a planned strategy.

Under Gambhir, India’s home Test record has become indefensible. There have been repeated failures to field a stable side, and the brittle batting has exposed deep issues in technique, temperament and team identity. The series defeat and resulting fan revolt have thrust both Gambhir and the team management under intense pressure.
