Just before the much-anticipated start of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, a fire broke out at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, raising alarm among players and officials staying there. The blaze erupted on the sixth floor of the hotel, prompting swift action from emergency responders. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
According to officials, the fire was contained quickly and did not reach the hotel’s interior. PSL CEO Salman Naseer assured that all players and franchises remained safe and unharmed, thanks to the timely response of the fire department. Zafar Iqbal, Director of Emergency at the Capital Development Authority, confirmed that six fire trucks and around 50 firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes.
Scheduling Clash with IPL 2025
The PSL 2025 season kicks off with a thrilling opener between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. This year, the tournament overlaps with the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the first time, forcing PSL organizers to carefully adjust match timings.
To avoid direct clashes with IPL games, PSL matches will start at 8:00 PM PST, an hour after IPL fixtures begin. Salman Naseer acknowledged the scheduling challenge, noting that the crowded cricket calendar left them with no alternative but to schedule the tournament during April-May. However, he expressed confidence that PSL’s dedicated fan base will ensure strong viewership despite the overlap.

New Additions and Franchise Developments
As PSL celebrates its 10th season, several enhancements have been made to boost the tournament’s broadcast quality and appeal. Naseer highlighted that holding the PSL during the IPL window had one unexpected benefit — the availability of top international players who went unsold in the IPL auction. Moreover, the league has attracted interest from potential investors for two new franchises, which are likely to be introduced next year. Addressing concerns about strained relationships between some franchise owners and the PSL management, Naseer emphasized the importance of resolving disputes privately rather than in public forums. He also revealed that all franchise owners would receive revised fee structures for the next decade, giving them the choice to accept or opt out of the PCB’s offer.
With added excitement and a few early hiccups, PSL 2025 is all set to deliver another season of thrilling cricket action.
