Former India Coach Warns Rivals: Abhishek Sharma Could Decide T20 World Cup
Abhishek Sharma

Former India head coach Sanjay Bangar has highlighted how crucial left-handed opener Abhishek Sharma could be for India’s chances in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. With India set to defend their title in February, Bangar stressed that Sharma’s explosive batting could shape the team’s fortunes on the big stage.

According to him, if Sharma “takes off” early in the tournament with strong performances, he could become a defining force for India’s campaign. This view is rooted in Sharma’s remarkable form in recent years, where he has emerged not only as a powerful T20 batter but also as a player whose fearless style aligns with India’s aggressive approach in the shortest format.

Bangar’s confidence in Sharma is backed by more than just occasional fireworks—statistics and expert praise have followed the left-hander. In 2025, Sharma finished as one of the top-ranked T20I batters globally, showcasing how his consistency and aggression can unsettle bowling attacks.

His ability to score quickly and force momentum shifts gives India the kind of fast starts that can put pressure on opponents from the outset. Given the team’s strategy of high-tempo cricket, Bangar believes Sharma’s contributions could be pivotal. As he put it, “A fearless and aggressive brand of cricket is only possible with a player like Abhishek Sharma.”

Why His Style Matters in World Cup Cricket

Sharma’s role goes beyond mere individual flair—it fits neatly into the way India wants to play its T20 cricket. The current Indian setup under coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasized attacking cricket from the first ball, aiming to dominate bowlers with intent rather than just accumulate runs quietly.

Sharma, with his natural ability to take on bowlers early, embodies this philosophy. His knack for consistently posting quick runs helps India post intimidating totals or chase down challenging targets, a trait that could be especially valuable in high-pressure World Cup games.

His presence at the top also takes pressure off other senior batters by setting the tone immediately. If he performs as expected, India’s middle-order can play with increased freedom, knowing they have a strong foundation laid early on. This dynamic could give India a strategic edge over teams that rely primarily on middle-order firepower rather than explosive opening stands.

Balancing Aggression With Consistency

While confidence is high, some voices in the cricketing world also urge Sharma to balance aggression with tactical awareness. Opponents will undoubtedly prepare plans to counter his attacking style, particularly in World Cup conditions where strategic nuance matters. Experts believe that while Sharma’s fearless approach can be a game-winner, adapting shot selection and situational awareness will determine just how much impact he has on India’s title defence.
