Former India cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra has backed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Abhishek Sharma to have a proper breakout season in the IPL 2026.
The No. 1-ranked T20I batter has featured in eight seasons so far, but he is yet to cross the 500-run mark as well. However, Abhishek Sharma had a huge role in SRH’s run to the finals in IPL 2024, where he scored 484 runs at an average of 32.27 and a strike rate of 204.22 as well.
However, Aakash Chopra also backed Abhishek Sharma to make the biggest statement over the likes of Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Ayush Mhatre, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Abishek Porel, Nehal Wadhera, and Tilak Varma in IPL 2026 as well.
“He has not had a breakout ‘breakout’ season thus far is actually how we have defined it. This should be the season,” Aakash Chopra said on Star Sports.
Aakash Chopra also feels that there is more expectation from Abhishek and Tilak when compared to Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Priyansh Arya, and other players who are still in the early stages as well.
“There are capped Indians as well, where there is Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma. If there are names like Dhruv Jurel as well, then you are expecting a lot more, then you are expecting them to be consistent. You also want them to strike at a higher clip, because you are a capped Indian, in fact there are even World champions in that list. So, your expectations and demands from them is a little different,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
