Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu proposed that MS Dhoni could utilize the Impact Player rule in the upcoming IPL to delegate captaincy responsibilities during the middle overs, thereby facilitating the grooming of a successor for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Rayudu noted the importance of this transition phase for CSK, given Dhoni’s advancing age and the necessity to identify a new leader for the team.
While expressing his personal preference for Dhoni to retain the captaincy, Rayudu acknowledged the potential for a leadership change. Rayudu, who retired from cricket last year and is set to debut as a commentator in IPL 2024, highlighted Dhoni’s recent social media hint about assuming a different role in the tournament.
He speculated that Dhoni is unlikely to promote himself up the batting order, instead favoring the opportunity to nurture younger players, particularly in light of Devon Conway’s injury. Reflecting on Dhoni’s unwavering commitment to CSK, Rayudu emphasized the former captain’s determination to play the full season, even if not fully fit, citing Dhoni’s history of playing through injuries.
He also praised Dhoni’s consistent approach to player selection, noting his astute observation of players and his tendency to maintain a core group throughout theĀ season. “In the middle overs, Dhoni could delegate captaincy duties using the Impact Player rule, facilitating a smooth leadership transition for CSK,” Rayudu suggested. “Although I personally prefer Dhoni as captain, this season might see the emergence of a new leader.”
Rayudu also commented on Dhoni’s potential role change hinted at on social media, speculating that Dhoni might prioritize nurturing young talent over advancing his own batting position, especially considering Conway’s absence. “Dhoni’s commitment to CSK ensures he’ll play the full season, irrespective of minor injuries,” Rayudu noted. “His careful selection process guarantees stability within the team throughout the tournament.”
