India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has shared insights regarding the playing XI for the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh. One of the key decisions is the inclusion of Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper-batter, who will take priority over Dhruv Jurel. Pant’s return marks his comeback to the Test side following an absence due to injuries sustained in a car accident. His last appearance was in December 2022 against Bangladesh.
Gambhir Stresses Patience for Jurel and Sarfaraz
In a pre-match press conference in Chennai, Gambhir clarified that the team doesn’t drop players but selects based on the best fit for the lineup. He acknowledged the talent of both Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, who had recently debuted for India in the third Test against England. Sarfaraz made an immediate impact with two half-centuries, while Jurel was impressed with his performance in his second Test, earning the ‘Player of the Match’ award. Despite these achievements, they will not be part of the XI for the upcoming Test, as Pant and KL Rahul are set to return.
Gambhir emphasized the importance of waiting for the right opportunity, saying that while Jurel and Sarfaraz are excellent players, they must be patient for their next chance. Sarfaraz has accumulated 200 runs across five innings, boasting an average of 50.00 with three half-centuries, while Jurel has 190 runs from four innings with an average of 53.67.
Gambhir praised Pant for his explosive batting and wicketkeeping, noting that while Pant’s abilities with the bat often overshadow his work behind the stumps, he remains a key asset, particularly against spin bowlers. Pant’s inclusion will undoubtedly bolster India’s chances, with Gambhir lauding him for his consistent performance across varying conditions.
The first Test against Bangladesh will be played at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, starting on September 19.
