After India’s narrow defeat in the 1st Test against England in the 2025 series, head coach Gautam Gambhir faced a barrage of tough questions. The loss, which saw India fall short in critical moments, triggered criticism around fielding lapses and team discipline.
Gambhir acknowledged that even the world’s best fielders can drop catches but emphasized the importance of sticking to the team’s plans. He didn’t shy away from admitting that India’s fielding let them down, particularly during crucial phases when dropped chances turned the momentum in England’s favor. However, he stressed that mistakes happen and what’s more important is learning from them and correcting them quickly.
Accountability and Discipline at the Forefront
Gambhir made it clear that his coaching philosophy centers on accountability. He highlighted the need for players to execute the pre-decided strategies laid out in the dressing room. Deviations from the agreed-upon plan, he warned, could result in players being benched.
Gambhir’s firm stance showed that discipline, both on and off the field, is a non-negotiable aspect under his leadership. He believes that a disciplined and united team approach is what ultimately wins matches, and not just individual brilliance. According to him, team success depends on every member being fully aligned with the collective game plan.
Focus Shifts to Team Performance, Not Individuals
While some pointed fingers at individual errors—like missed catches or underwhelming performances—Gambhir shifted the focus back to team execution. He emphasized that India’s defeat wasn’t due to one or two players but a result of underperformance in all departments. Batters failed to convert their starts, and the bowlers couldn’t maintain pressure for long spells.
He also dismissed rumours of internal conflict with senior players, calling them baseless. His leadership style, he said, is transparent and driven by results, not names. Gambhir also underlined that transition periods in Test cricket are natural and require both patience and consistency in execution. While he has found success in white-ball formats, he acknowledged that red-ball cricket presents a different kind of challenge—one he’s committed to overcoming.
