Rishabh Pant’s return to Test cricket did not unfold as expected, but head coach Gautam Gambhir has strongly defended the wicketkeeper-batter after India’s defeat in the opening Test against South Africa at Kolkata. Pant, who rejoined the squad after recovering from a foot injury sustained during the fourth Test in England earlier this year, struggled to make an impact with scores of 27 and 2 in the two innings.
With regular captain Shubman Gill ruled out due to a neck injury, Pant stepped in as stand-in skipper. However, India failed to chase a modest 124-run target, folding for just 93 on the third day. Despite the setback, Gambhir reiterated his belief in Pant, calling him “a world-class batter” in Test cricket. He stressed that Pant’s natural attacking style remains essential and that players returning from long breaks often need time to settle. Gambhir expressed full confidence that Pant would “deliver in future” once he regains rhythm.
South Africa Breaks India’s Eden Gardens Fortress
The Kolkata loss marked India’s first defeat at the iconic Eden Gardens since December 2012, ending a long-standing unbeaten run at the venue. South Africa, led by Temba Bavuma, displayed remarkable discipline and seized critical moments to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Bavuma’s composed half-century gave stability to the visitors’ innings, but the real damage was done by their spinners.
Simon Harmer delivered a match-winning performance with an eight-wicket haul across both innings, while Keshav Maharaj maintained relentless pressure from the other end. Harmer’s figures of 4/21 and Maharaj’s 2/15 strangled India’s scoring options, and Marco Jansen’s early breakthroughs in the second innings unsettled India’s chase. India, despite needing only 124, could not form partnerships and collapsed under South Africa’s sustained control.
All Eyes On Guwahati For The Decider
With the series now balanced precariously, India turns its attention to the second Test, scheduled to begin on November 22 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The match offers India a crucial chance for redemption as they seek to level the series.
For Pant, it serves as an opportunity to convert Gambhir’s trust into decisive performances, while the rest of the team will aim to address the batting lapses that cost them the Kolkata Test. The upcoming contest is expected to be intense, with both sides pushing for momentum as the series reaches its decisive stage.
