Gautam Gambhir said that if Indian women’s team could defeat England at Lord’s in the World Cup finals tomorrow, then it would bigger than 2011 men’s World Cup held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The Indian women’s team have performed exceptionally well during the tournament beating hosts England in the first match. After that, they defeated West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the next 3 matches.

The Indian women’s team lost to South Africa and Australia in the next two matches. In the virtual quarter finals match, India smashed New Zealand by 186 runs to book face Australia. Harmanpreet Kaur’s 171 was a special knock as they won the match by 36 runs to qualify for the Women’s World Cup. It is the second time that Indian women’s team reached the finals only for a second time. It would be a special occasion as they have done the country proud by playing such good cricket in England conditions.

“I genuinely believe that if they go on to win this World Cup, this is going to be bigger than India winning the men”s 2011 World Cup. Because back then, we were the favorites to win the title at home,” said Gambhir. Gambhir scored 97 during the 2011 World Cup finals played at Mumbai on 3rd April.

“Indian women reaching the final has inspired a lot of girls in the country. They are one step away from creating history,” Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.

It has been an excellent team performance by the Indian women’s team in this world cup. All the Indian players have shown great composure and play with fearless attitude. Smriti Mandhana, Raj, Kaur, Veda Krishnamurthy, Goswami have performed well according to the situation. It would be huge if the Indian women’s team could beat England.

During the 2011 edition, the Indian team was one of the favorites to win the World Cup. They performed brilliantly finishing second in their group. In the quarter finals, they defeated defending Champions Australia, before beating Pakistan in the semi-finals. In the finals, on the back of great knocks by Gambhir and MS Dhoni, the Indian team won the match by 6 wickets to win their second World Cup after 28 years.

The Indian men’s team had quality players in 2011 world Cup consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Gambhir, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Sreesanth, R Ashwin, Ashish Nehra, Yusuf Pathan, Piyush Chawla. They performed well as a unit. It was a dream come true for team India and Sachin Tendulkar to win a World Cup in their own nation.
