The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has halted all the activities across the globe including the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was scheduled to commence from March 29; however, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had postponed the tournament for an indefinite period. But former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels it is important to host IPL from India’s perspective.

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned out to deadly for human lives. In India, it has already cost more 1350 lives with more than 42500 registered positive cases. Meanwhile, the last few days have witnessed a steep rise in coronavirus patients showing no signs of improvement.

In the wake of the pandemic, Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI deferred the cash-rich league until April 14, scheduled to start from March 29. However, the governing body had to postpone further for an indefinite period after Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the lockdown.

Despite the ongoing situation, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes it is important to host IPL for the country. The cricketer-turned-politician, despite agreeing that it is crucial to save human lives, but the cash-rich league will be helpful to change the mood of the country.

“As a politician, if you ask me then I would say it is very important for us to save the lives of the people. But if you want to change the mood of the country, not all IPLs are to win or lose, some are to change the mood of the country. So there could not be anything better than IPL for that,” Gambhir said in an interview with Sports Tak.

“I know, many people will say that IPL is more important for you, but personally, if IPL happens this year, as an Indian I feel, then any franchise should not look it from the way of winning or losing, they should look it in a way to change the spirit of the nation,” Gambhir added.
