Former Indian cricket team player and current BJP Member of Parliament, Gautam Gambhir, is no stranger to controversy, and his recent statement has once again thrust him into the spotlight. This time, the controversy revolves around a heated incident in the IPL 2023 match between the Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore, involving Virat Kohli and Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq.
The drama began when Virat Kohli, the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, clashed with Naveen-ul-Haq, a player from Afghanistan, during the IPL match. Gautam Gambhir, who now acts as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants, got involved in the dispute. Gambhir’s involvement took an interesting turn when he posted a suggestive birthday wish for Naveen-ul-Haq on social media, along with a photo of the two together.
In his post, Gambhir wrote, “Happy Birthday… There are very few like you, never change.”

The on-field altercation that led to this controversy occurred when Amit Mishra attempted to mediate a conversation between Virat Kohli, Mohammad Siraj, and Naveen-ul-Haq during Naveen’s batting. Kohli, however, continued to engage in a heated exchange with Naveen. After the match, Kohli and Naveen initially exchanged handshakes, but the argument persisted, eventually resulting in another handshake.
Naveen-ul-Haq is no stranger to controversy himself, as he has a history of passionate confrontations with other players, including Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir and Shahid Afridi during the Lankan Premier League.
Naveen’s fiery nature was on full display when he once stated, “If someone comes to me and says something, I will not back down. I have been like this since childhood. That is my nature. If I say that I will change from tomorrow, I am not telling the truth. Someone says something to me and I say retreat, it can never happen. Because aggression is in my body, it’s in my DNA.”
In essence, Gautam Gambhir’s involvement in this IPL 2023 controversy stems from his mentorship role with the Lucknow Super Giants and his social media post, which has drawn the attention of fans and sparked discussions about the heated clash between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq during the match.
