IPL 2020: Glenn Maxwell Has Been Too Hot And Cold – Gautam Gambhir

Kings XI Punjab batsmen Glenn Maxwell is facing the heat from former India opening batsmen Gautam Gambhir for being too ‘hot and cold’ this season. The Australian all-rounder was bought by KXIP in the 2020 IPL Auction for a whopping amount of 10.75 crores. But he hasn’t really met the expectations that came with his price tag as he so far only scored 30 runs in the 4 matches he’s played this season.

Prior to this season in 2014, Glenn Maxwell had a phenomenal run with the Punjab franchise when the first leg of the IPL was played in the UAE. But ever since that season, Maxwell hasn’t really had a great run in the IPL after that season. Such that even Gautam Gambhir has come out critical of the Australian all-rounder.

Glenn Maxwell Looks Completely Out Of Sorts: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir says that Maxwell has had only one decent IPL season which came way back in 2014. But after that season he’s looked too hot and cold since he looks completely out of sorts while batting this season. He further went on to say how Glenn Maxwell doesn’t look like the player he was in England a week back where he smashed a hundred in the final game.

“Glenn Maxwell has had only one decent IPL in the last 6-7 years. For the amount of money he has been bought for, he has been too hot and cold. He looks completely out of sorts. Since he’s arrived in the IPL, he doesn’t look like the player he was against England,” Gambhir said on ESPNCricinfo’s ‘Time-out’.

The former India opener further added how he isn’t sure if it’s the pitches in UAE he’s not able to score runs or is he feeling the pressure of his price tag. He wants franchises to rethink whether Glenn Maxwell is actually that match-winner they think he is.

“Not sure if it has to do with wickets (conditions) or money pressure but if you look at Maxwell’s performance in the IPL over an extended period of time, it has been very hot and cold. Franchises need to re-think whether Glenn Maxwell actually is the match-winner they think he is. Is he an Andre Russell or an AB de Villiers who can win your 3-4 games single-handedly? I doubt big time,” Gautam Gambhir added.
