GLT20 Canada: Umar Akmal Approached for Spot Fixing

Out of favour Pakistan middle-order batsman, Umar Akmal who is currently applying his trade in the Global T20 League Canada has reported to a match-fixing offer which was made by a former Pakistan cricketer. The T20 League which has featured some big names in the international circuit has come under the scanner after Akmal reported that a former Pakistan cricketer approached him of spot-fixing.

Akmal brought the matter to the notice of the Anti Corruption Unit of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Umar Akmal is currently playing for the Winnipeg Hawks in the 2nd edition of the GLT20. When asked to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about their decision, their spokesperson stated that they have nothing to do with the tournament and the administration is handled by Canada.

“Canada is handling the Global T20 League”s administration. Pakistan Cricket Board has nothing to do with it,” a PCB spokesperson stated. Meanwhile, there were as many as 5 Pakistan players who were given the No objection certificate by PCB to participate in this tournament. Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi is part of the tournament but he didn’t require a NOC because he is no more an active player in the international circuit.

The Pakistan batsman has been part of the playing XI thrice in this tournament so far. He has accumulated scores of 12,49 and 9 in the three matches. Umar Akmal last represented the national side ahead of the 2019 World Cup when Pakistan suffered a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of Australia. Due to his underperformance in the series, Akmal wasn’t included in the 2019 World Cup squad.

Meanwhile, there were some more controversies on Wednesday when players from Toronto Nationals and Montreal Tigers refused to board the bus over some payment related. Eventually, the match went ahead after a slight delay as it was reported by the GL T20 website that the match was delayed due to technical issues.
