England fast bowler Gus Atkinson shared a significant update regarding Chris Woakes’ injury during Day 1 of the fifth Test against India at The Kennington Oval. Atkinson admitted that the experienced pacer’s shoulder injury appears serious, casting doubt over his participation in the remainder of the match.
The injury occurred in the 57th over of the innings, bowled by Jamie Overton, when Woakes sprinted to stop a boundary following a drive from Karun Nair. While he successfully saved the four, Woakes landed awkwardly on his shoulder. He received medical attention on the field before walking off.
Speaking to BBC Test Match Special after the day’s play, Gus Atkinson commented:
“It doesn’t look great. We haven’t really spoken about it yet. I will be surprised if he takes any part in the game.”
Chris Woakes was the only bowler to feature in all five Tests. He dismissed KL Rahul for 14 on Day 1 at The Oval but returned modest figures of 1/46 from 14 overs.
Atkinson Expresses Frustration Over Limited Role In Test Series
The 27-year-old, who claimed two wickets on the opening day at The Oval, expressed that it’s been a frustrating spell for him, having been sidelined by a hamstring injury prior to this Test. The right-arm seamer, who also effected the run-out of Shubman Gill, further stated:
“It has been frustrating, very stop and start. I got back from the Champions Trophy and had a few weeks off, played a few county games and then the Test against Zimbabwe in which I unfortunately got injured.”
”And I haven’t played much cricket so it was pleasing I was available to play in this last Test. I feel good now so it is great. I felt fresh. It is a shame to only play one Test but it feels good.”
