“Hadn’t Really Thought About It” – Mitchell Marsh Responds To Winning The Allan Border Medal

Following his victory in the Allan Border Medal for 2023, Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh mentioned that winning it was something he didn’t envision. The 32-year-old expressed his desire to maintain consistency and ensure that the success is not short-lived.

Marsh emerged victorious over contenders like Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, and Nathan Lyon to secure the prestigious award. The West Australian had an outstanding year across different formats, highlighted by a successful comeback to Test cricket after a four-year hiatus.

In his post-award speech, the right-handed player humorously mentioned that he had enjoyed four beers by lunch. According to Fox Sports, he acknowledged:

“I hadn’t really thought about it until a few of the boys started getting stuck into me that they thought I was going to win it, and then I started thinking maybe I’m with a chance.”

“I had four beers at lunch so had better stop there. And now I’m sort of hoping that me winning this is not like COVID and we’ll look back in three years time and go, that was a weird time.”

Marsh played a crucial role in Australia’s triumph in the 2023 World Cup, scoring 441 runs in 10 matches with an average of 49. Notably, he registered centuries both as an opener and at the No. 3 position.

One of his most memorable Test innings was a brisk 118 runs off a run-a-ball against England in the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

“She gave me the perspective on life I needed” – Mitchell Marsh praises his wife

The all-rounder who excels in seam bowling also acknowledged his wife Greta, coach Andrew McDonald, and captain Pat Cummins for their belief in him. He further stated:

“Grets is an amazing human, I said in my wedding vows eight months ago she gave me the perspective on life I needed and our life is a lot of fun. If I get a duck, or get a hundred, she’s always the same.”

“To Ronny (McDonald) and Patty (Cummins) you believed in me and I can’t thank you enough. I’m a bit fat at times and I love a beer but you see the best in me always. You’ve changed my life.”

Marsh is taking a break from the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies but is set to make a return as the captain for Australia in the subsequent T20I series.
