Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh has backed Hardik Pandya for the T20 World Cup 2024. The all-rounder has been out of the Indian team for the past few months as he is recovering from an ankle injury that he suffered during the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. He is likely to be fit before the 2024 Indian Premier League.
Hardik Pandya led Team India in the T20 format after the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final loss in Rohit Sharma’s absence. However, injuries have continued to hampered his career. Yuvraj Singh expressed that Hardik is injury-prone, but India needs to find ahead of the mega-event. Speaking to the Times of India, Yuvraj Singh said,
“Hardik is a very important member of the team and India needs him. He is injury-prone and we need to give him time to recuperate and settle down. We have to get the best out of him.”
We need to have more options for captaincy: Yuvraj Singh
Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh feels India needs to groom more captains in the T20 format. He expressed that they could look at Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill, apart from Hardik Pandya. Suryakumar Yadav has led India in seven T20I matches and has a win percentage of 71.42 in the format. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the Gujarat Titans captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2024 season.
“As for captaincy, we need to have more options. There is Suryakumar Yadav, who has been captaining India in T20Is. There is Shubman Gill, who is the captain of IPL,” said Yuvraj Singh.
India has begun their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup. They have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan. They will be taking on Ireland in their opening match of the World Cup on June 5 in New York.
