After being sidelined with a quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup 2025 — which even forced him to miss the final — Hardik Pandya is back in contention for the forthcoming series against South Africa national cricket team. Earlier this month, he made a comeback in domestic cricket playing for Baroda cricket team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025.
In that run-up, he showcased his fitness and form — most notably scoring a match-winning 77 against Punjab cricket team and also contributing with the ball, picking up a wicket. He further featured against Gujarat, earning praise and proving that he’s ready for international duty. Â
Having convinced the selectors of his readiness, Pandya was included in the squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series vs South Africa. He reached Cuttack on December 6, ahead of the rest of the team, setting the stage for his return to the international arena. Â
Solo Practice at Barabati: A Statement of Intent
On Sunday, ahead of the first T20I at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Pandya opted to practice alone — a decision that underlines both his focus and commitment. With the rest of the squad yet to gather, he took the initiative to start preparations on his own. Â
The session began with a thorough warm-up under the watch of team support staff, including physios and trainers. He then requested both spin and pace net bowlers. Despite a slight twinge in his right hip — a residual effect, perhaps, of his earlier injury — he bowled with full effort for 20 minutes. Post this spell, he received a massage before stepping out to bat. Â
Batting Fireworks and Confidence Boost
When Pandya finally padded up, he looked in superb rhythm. Reports from the nets suggested that he dispatched several towering sixes — many coming straight off the middle of his new bat, with the ball sailing deep into the stands. Observers believed the clear bat-ball timing spoke of confidence and readiness. Â
Even though he experienced some discomfort while bowling, his willingness to push through, coupled with his batting strength, seems to signal that he’s ready to contribute fully when the series begins. This solo practice could also be viewed as a personal assertion — a message to teammates and selectors that he intends to be match-ready and competitive from the outset.
