England sealed the ODI series with a dominant performance, driven by two outstanding centuries that left Sri Lanka chasing an uphill task. After a brief wobble at the start, England regained control through a magnificent partnership between Harry Brook and Joe Root.
Brook produced a breathtaking innings, smashing an unbeaten 136 from just 66 deliveries, striking the ball cleanly and relentlessly as he tore into the Sri Lankan bowling attack. His innings featured a flurry of boundaries and towering sixes that shifted momentum decisively in England’s favor. Root, playing the anchor role to perfection, complemented Brook with a composed 111 off 108 balls, ensuring England built a formidable total of 357 for three.
Reflecting on his innings, Brook said, “Working on a few things in the nets and it paid off,” adding that he was pleased the partnership helped England reach a competitive score. He also praised his batting partner, stating, “Root is exceptional, to have him in the side helps every day.”
Sri Lanka’s Resistance Falls Short
Sri Lanka began their chase with intent, showing early signs of resistance through aggressive strokeplay at the top. Pathum Nissanka provided a quick start, reaching a brisk half-century that briefly raised hopes of a strong response. The standout effort, however, came from Pavan Rathnayake, who registered a fighting 121 from 115 balls. Batting with confidence and patience, Rathnayake attempted to steady the innings while keeping the required run rate in check.
Despite individual brilliance, Sri Lanka struggled to maintain momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. The mounting pressure of the steep target eventually took its toll, and the hosts were bowled out for 304 in the 47th over, falling well short of England’s imposing total. The defeat marked Sri Lanka’s first home series loss in five years, ending a long run of dominance on familiar conditions.
Spin Attack Seals Series Victory
England’s bowlers played a crucial role in ensuring the batting effort was not undone. The spin trio of Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, and Adil Rashid proved particularly effective, combining to claim six wickets and apply sustained pressure through the middle overs. Their disciplined lines and variations disrupted Sri Lanka’s chase and prevented any late surge.
The win handed England a 2-1 series triumph, marking their first major ODI series victory away from home since 2023. It also highlighted the team’s growing balance, with both batting firepower and bowling control clicking at the right moment. As Brook summed up after the match, he was delighted that contributions across departments helped England close out the series in convincing fashion.
