Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik praised captain Suryakumar Yadav’s batting approach in the first T20I against Australia in Canberra on Wednesday, October 29. The 25-year-old entered the series struggling for form in T20Is. Before his unbeaten 39 off 24 balls in the opening game, Suryakumar had averaged below 12 in the format throughout the year.
He started cautiously, managing just 12 runs from his first 11 deliveries. Discussing Yadav’s innings on Cricbuzz’s post-match show, Karthik shared his thoughts on the skipper’s composed approach at the crease.
“He has that skill if he is willing to absorb pressure if sometimes he doesn’t get runs. He will only get better after this knock. This country as a venue suits him very nicely as he loves pace and bounce. I have no doubt that he is a player who will definitely succeed and be very effective as the World Cup comes purely because of the skills he possesses.”
“There’s beauty in how he reads the ball” – Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik lauded Suryakumar Yadav’s calculated approach at the crease following his brilliant performance in the series opener against Australia. Despite his unconventional batting technique, the right-hander has maintained impressive T20I stats, averaging over 37 with a strike rate of 164.18 across 91 matches.
“There is a certain beauty to the way he picks which ball is going to come to him because he is one of those batters without too much foot movement. He almost premediates into a certain position but for him to constantly be ahead of the bowler and know what he wants to do, that’s a great skill to have,” said Karthik (via the aforementioned source).
With the first T20I washed out, Suryakumar Yadav will aim to notch up a half-century this year when India face Australia in the second T20I at Melbourne on Friday, October 31.
