Jacob Bethell, a promising all-rounder from Warwickshire, is making waves in the cricketing world. At just 21 years old, he is already experiencing the electrifying atmosphere of Indian cricket while gearing up for a significant stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His recent performances against India in the ODI series have further cemented his potential as a future star.

Jacob Bethell’s Rise in Cricket

Bethell’s journey began with Warwickshire, where his all-round skills caught the attention of selectors. His ability to perform under pressure quickly made him a valuable asset in England’s domestic cricket scene. His performances in county cricket showcased his flair as a stylish left-handed batsman and a dependable left-arm spinner. He soon earned a call-up to England’s limited-overs squad, setting the stage for international recognition.

First Experience in India

Visiting India for the first time, Bethell was mesmerized by the country’s deep-rooted passion for cricket. The immense fanfare surrounding the sport made an immediate impression on him. Despite being a relatively new name, Bethell has already felt the love from Indian fans.

“I’m looking forward to it. RCB is a great franchise and I’ve felt the love over here. Every ground I’ve been to, as soon as I walk on to the pitch they start chanting: RCB, RCB. There’s definitely a lot of support,” said Bethell.

Joining Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

RCB, often compared to Manchester United in football due to its massive following, has always been a team that garners immense support. Even without an IPL title, the franchise boasts some of the biggest superstars in the game. Meeting and potentially playing alongside Virat Kohli is a dream for many young cricketers. Bethell acknowledges the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest cricketers of all time.

Bethell added, “To play along with the likes of players like that would be really cool. But as soon as you play against someone you realise you’re playing the same game and they can make the same mistakes you can. It’s just that those guys obviously got a lot better at not making the mistakes.”

His Performance Against India in ODIs

In England’s ODI series against India, Bethell showcased his temperament by scoring a crucial 51 runs when his team was struggling at 111 for four. Apart from his batting, Bethell contributed with the ball, dismissing Shreyas Iyer with a well-executed left-arm spin delivery.

The Challenge of IPL and Expectations

Playing in the IPL requires quick adaptability to different pitch conditions. Bethell’s ability to adjust will be tested in the high-pressure environment. Facing the best bowlers in the world will be a challenge, but also an invaluable learning experience for the young all-rounder.

“I see myself as a genuine all-rounder. In international cricket so far I haven’t bowled a lot of overs in T20. I’ve bowled a few in 50-over cricket and whenever I get the chance to bowl and state my claim, and put us in a good position, I will. It’s a massive part of my package,” he concluded.
