“He’s Apologised, He’s Taken His Punishment” – Joe Root Backs Harry Brook After ODI Win

Joe Root publicly stood by Harry Brook’s leadership following England’s series-levelling victory in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, making it clear that the young captain has owned up to his mistakes and is focused on moving ahead. Root underlined that Brook has taken responsibility for the so-called “drinking gate” episode and has shown maturity in dealing with the fallout.

He stressed that the incident should not define Brook’s future and instead be seen as a learning moment. According to Root, the key factor is accountability, and in his view, Brook has shown exactly that by accepting the consequences and committing himself to the team’s progress. Root believes the England setup should now allow Brook the space to grow into his role rather than letting one episode overshadow his potential.

Faith In Coaching And Team Direction

Beyond Brook’s situation, Root also voiced strong support for the current leadership and coaching structure, particularly backing Brendon McCullum and the wider staff despite England’s disappointing Ashes tour in Australia. Root argued that the environment created by the coaches has helped players evolve rather than holding them back. “I think Baz (McCullum) is one of the best coaches I’ve ever worked with,” he said.

“If you look at my own personal game, the time that he’s been coach, it’s improved tenfold. I think most of the players, if you look individually, all of their games have improved under his tenure as coach. Same with the batting coach and assistant coach. They’ve done a lot of really good things for English cricket and will do in the future as well.” For Root, the focus remains on the long-term growth of the squad rather than short-term criticism.

Reflecting On The Ashes With Perspective

While offering optimism, Root did not dismiss the disappointment of the Ashes. He admitted England were unhappy with how the campaign unfolded but insisted there is still plenty to look forward to from this group. “Obviously, we’re disappointed with the way things went out in Australia, but I still think there’s a lot of more really exciting things to come from this group,” he said. Root also revealed he is intentionally delaying a full judgment on the Ashes until emotions settle.

“After this tour I’m going to get a couple of months to sit back and look at it properly and probably emotionlessly. I think that’s probably the most sensible way to do it. I could sit here and get wound up and angry about it and probably say something that I don’t necessarily mean or I could give myself some time to properly reflect on it and then have a proper, honest conversation with a bit more reason and sense behind it,” Root said.
