Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs delivered a harsh assessment of England batter Zak Crawley’s recent performances, labeling him as an average batsman who struggles on pitches with some seam movement.
It’s noteworthy that Crawley faced uncertainty about his place in the squad in 2022. However, the Test head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes showed confidence in him, leading to a notable improvement in his performance under the Bazball ideology.
Gibbs’ critique of Crawley came in response to a user on X (formerly Twitter) praising the batter’s recent improvement, but Gibbs expressed disagreement with the fan’s perspective.
“On wickets that do a bit he’s (Crawley) bang average mate.. actually defends balls that are missing 5th stump,” Gibbs tweeted on his ‘X’ handle.

Interestingly, another participant joined the conversation, pointing out the recent centuries scored by Crawley. However, Gibbs swiftly responded, expressing his opinion that the conditions were not as challenging when Crawley achieved those good performances.
“3 of those countries you get no seam movement, everything gun barrel straight but your assessment will be better seeing you’ve seen more of him than I have,” Gibbs tweeted.
